24/9/2024: Michel Niellon and Prieure Roch Offer: Chassagne Montrachet and Vosne Romanee
Nestled in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, Domaine Michel Niellon is well-known for his Chardonnays. Being a vigneron with more than 60 years of experience, this Domaine has brought global recognition to this small family Domaine. Producing wines from prized vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet, Niellon’s focus is on crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines.
Domaine Michel Niellon owns and leases parcels in Chassagne-Montrachet's top vineyards, including Premier Crus Clos de ls Maltroie, Les Chaumees Clos de la Truffiere and Les Champs Gain. The Domaine also produces wine from the Grand Cru Batard and Chevalier-Montrachet. Niellon’s wines are known for their purity and intensity, often rich and complex. Notes of citrus, white flowers, and spice, are typical of his Chassagnes, and often referred as textbook examples of Chassagne-Montrachet. The wines are full of structure yet delicate, and exhibit a typical balance between power and finesse. His Chevalier-Montrachet (neighbour to Leflaive's), often gives Leflaive's Chevalier-Montrachet a run for their money.
Since 1990, Michel’s son-in-law, Michel Coutoux, had taken on daily operations at the Domaine, and under their joint stewardship, Domaine Michel Niellon continues to produce the finest Chardonnays, collectors cannot forget.
Domaine Prieure Roch is also know as The Maverick to some, and represents a more avant-garde, natural approach to wine-making in Burgundy. Founded in 1988 by Henry-Frederic Roch, the co-director of the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC), Prieure Roch has built a reputation for its uncompromising natural wine-making philosophy and its production of highly sought-after Pinot Noirs.
Domaine Prieure Roch is based in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and its vineyards span several prestigious appellations, including Vosne-Romanee, Gevrey-Chambertin and Sauvigny-les-Beaune. One of the jewels in its portfolio is the minuscule Vosne Romanee Les Suchots, an iconic Premier Cru to many. Prieure Roch’s wines stand out solely for their raw, unfiltered expression of Pinot Noir, no replication by any others. There is minimal intervention, whole-cluster fermentation, minimal sulfur, avoids filtration, and these result in wines that are often described as earthy, vibrant, intensely aromatic, combined with an ethereal texture. These wines can be polarizing due to their bold, unorthodox style, but they have earned a cult following among enthusiasts, especially natural wine lovers. Some say Prieure Roch pioneered the natural wine movement. Today, the Domaine is managed by Yannick Champ, who continue Roch’s legacy of innovation and dedication to natural practices.
Domaine Michel Niellon and Domaine Prieure Roch may take different approaches to wine-making, but both capture the magic of Burgundy in their own unique ways. To me, both specialises in Burgundy of their own appellation. These Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs will draw you to them, along with their indelible impression.
19/9/2024: Raiding an Italian Collection Part 3 and Final: Brovia | Gaja | G. Conterno | Soldera
If there is an ultimate Italian wine offer for this year, you are looking at it now. With back vintages going back to the 60s and 70s (Gaja), then majority 90s and 2000s, these four iconic producers : Brovia, Gaja, Giacomo Conterno, and Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera, complete our third and final series of "Raiding an Italian collection" for this month. These wines are rare, even in auctions. Today, these are exclusively available on Wine Bond marketplace. Start raiding.
Brovia is a fourth-generation family-run estate renowned for its traditional, terroir-driven Barolo wines. Today, Elena and husband Alex Sanchez, helm the estate, maintaining its focus on organic viticulture and minimal intervention. 2004 for Brovia was characterized by near-perfect growing conditions that provided much-needed balance. The growing season began with a mild spring, leading to healthy vine growth. Summer was warm but not excessively hot, with ideal ripening conditions that allowed the grapes to develop complexity, balanced acidity, and tannins. This was followed by a long, dry autumn that allowed for a slow, even maturation of the grapes, which benefits from extended hang time. Brovia owns some of the most coveted vineyards in Barolo, with key plots in Rocche di Castiglione, Villero, Garblet Sue, and Brea. These vineyards are characterized by diverse soil types, each offering distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo. Rocche di Castiglione is known for its limestone and sandy soils, and produces wines of elegance, finesse, and pronounced floral aromas. Villero is a more structured wine that emerges from the heavier clay soils, offering bolder tannins and darker fruit profiles. Brea is located in Serralunga d'Alba, and contributes powerful, full-bodied Barolos with a marked earthiness.
Gaja needs no further introduction, in particular for many, whom had met Angelo Gaja, the fourth generation owner. He is also known as the one whom elevated the estate to global prominence, and always dons a full black suit. Just like a "Godfather". The modern (and to some, controversial) techniques at Gaja, introduced to traditional Barbaresco and Barolo, set the new standards in Piedmont and Italian wine-making, and inspired many. With over 100 hectares in Barbaresco and Barolo, with additional vineyards in Tuscany’s Montalcino and Bolgheri regions, nothing is ever taken for granted. Rigorous sorting and low yields, is the key to consistent wines every year. Sori San Lorenzo is a steep vineyard that produces some of the estate’s most structured wines. Sori Tildin has a slightly more delicate and aromatic expression. Sperss is the powerhouse that has an individual flavour profile quite unlike the rest. Today's Gaja offer will be the best thus far.
Giacomo Conterno is one of Piedmont’s most revered traditional Barolo producers. The estate’s iconic Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a benchmark for the region, considered by many to be the greatest expression of Nebbiolo in the world. The Conterno family has stayed true to a classic wine-making style, with long fermentation, extended aging, and a deep respect for vintage variation. In challenging vintages, the family has been known to step up in their wine-making, overcoming these obstacles. Conterno’s fame vineyard is Cascina Francia, located in Serralunga d'Alba, known for its structured Barolos. In 2008, the family acquired an additional vineyard in the holdings of Serralunga. The unique terroir of Serralunga yields wines of immense structure and depth. The hallmark of Conterno’s wine-making is patience. The Barolos are often kept in the winery’s cellars for up to a decade before being deemed ready for the market. The Barolo Riserva Monfortino is only produced in exceptional vintages and is aged for an extended period to allow its complexity to fully develop. Conterno believes in low-intervention wine-making, allowing the vineyard and vintage to dictate the wine’s character. Today's collection of Monfortinos, will blow you away.
The late Gianfranco Soldera would be proud of this line-up, a near-perfect, nine vintages vertical collection, of his Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. Gianfranco Soldera was known for his uncompromising dedication to quality, and the estate has a cult-like following. The Case Basse estate covers just 23 hectares, with 6 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Soldera’s vineyards are managed with extreme care, using organic and biodynamic practices long before they became fashionable. It produces Sangiovese at its best. The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a rare and prized wine, offering profound elegance, depth, and longevity. Every legend has an alter-ego, and Gianfranco's eccentric attitude, and his rows with The Consortium de Brunello di Montalcino, often spark controversies in the Tuscan wine community. He also never allows visitors to spit his wines at winery tastings. Unfortunately, Gianfranco never did fully comprehend the 2012 vandalism incident and in the later vintages after the incident, when they were bottled as Sangiovese IGT, you could taste the "sadness" in the wines. Stella di Campalto was the rare few whom had understudied under Gianfranco, and knows how to make a Brunello quite like Soldera. Sadly, Gianfranco passed away in 2019, his mastery skills in wine-making lost forever. To a legendary winemaker of our time, and to remember Gianfranco, don't miss these back vintages from 1991 to 2002, now available in very limited quantities.
16/9/2024: The Biggest 2005 Clarendon Hills Collection | with Kilikanoon Flagship Shiraz Wooden Box Set
Australia wineries Clarendon Hills and Kilikanoon, are two wineries that have not only gained national fame but also carved out a solid international reputation. Each winery brings its own unique approach to wine-making, driven by a deep respect for the land and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
Clarendon Hills: has earned a reputation as one of the finest producers from the renowned McLaren Vale. It is particularly known for its focus on single-vineyard wines. The winery expresses the unique terroir of each vineyard in its own way with respect for the land, and the results are reflective of the land from which they come, distinct in its own way. Soil, climate, topography, plays a crucial role in the flavor profile of the wines. Whether it’s the chalky soils of Blewitt Springs or the old bush vines of the Clarendon region, the wines display an array of flavours. The most famous Syrah (Shiraz) by Clarendon Hills is the Astralis, which has become a benchmark in Australian wine-making. The Astralis is sourced from low-yielding, ancient vines and gain high scores from wine critics every year. In addition to Syrah, the winery also produces excellent examples of Grenache, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. All these wines are made with the same attention to details, and the string of accolades shows the prowess of Clarendon Hills.
Kilikanoon: is located in Clare Valley, and is another premier winery. With a focus on producing wines that reflect the rugged beauty of the Clare Valley, Kilikanoon has quickly established itself as a leader known for producing wines with intense flavor and long aging potential. Owning some of the oldest vines in the Clare Valley, these form the backbone of many of Kilikanoon's best wines. While the winery itself is relatively young, the wine-making techniques are rooted in tradition, blending age-old practices with modern technology to ensure consistency and quality. The winery’s Shiraz are rich and powerful wines, with a touch of elegance in some of them.
While both Clarendon Hills and Kilikanoon share a dedication to produce high-quality wines, their approach offer a fascinating contrast. Clarendon Hills focuses on the intricacies of single vineyards, allowing the unique characteristics of each site to shine through, while Kilikanoon blends tradition with innovation, creating wines that reflect both the history and the future of Australian wine-making. Both wineries are bringing Australian wine-making to new heights in their own extraordinary ways.

This prime position allows the Musigni vineyard to benefit from exceptional exposure and terroir, contributing to the complexity and elegance of the wines produced from this parcel. The Clos Vougeot "Musigni" from Gros Frere is known for its deep, rich, and concentrated profile. The wine typically exhibits a bouquet of dark fruits of blackberries and black cherries, intertwined with notes of spices, earth, and some floral hints, reflecting the proximity to Musigny. 1990 Salon is a Champagne that truly reflects the brilliance of this vintage with remarkable depth, complexity, and aging potential. 6/9/2024: Raiding an Italian Collection Part 2: 1967 Barolo and Barbaresco | with some older Brunellos
1967 Piedmont treasures are here, and this vintage in Piedmont, especially for Barolo and Barbaresco, is considered one of the region's most remarkable years, producing wines of exceptional quality that have aged beautifully today.
1967 was characterized by a perfect growing season, with a balance of warm days and cool nights, especially during the crucial ripening period. A mild spring of successful flowering and fruit set. Summer was warm with occasional rain that helped maintain moisture levels in the soil. The autumn, particularly September and October, was dry and sunny, providing optimal conditions for the Nebbiolo grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness. The harvest occurred under excellent conditions, grapes were in perfect health when they were picked.
Vintage 1967 for Barolo and Barbaresco, are quintessential examples of a traditional wine-making style that dominated the region during this period. Modern techniques like temperature-controlled fermentation and short maceration times were not yet widely adopted or available. Instead, winemakers relied on past experiences, long macerations, and extended aging in large oak casks. Minimal intervention in the cellar was widely preferred, and show the prowess and talents of these producers.
Today, the 1967 Barolo and Barbaresco, often exhibit a bouquet of dried roses, tar, truffles, forest floor, underpinned by flavors of dark cherries, leather, tobacco, and spices. The tannins, which were initially firm and austere, have softened considerably over time, providing a long and lingering finish. Acidity, maybe a nemesis of young Nebbiolos, has now preserved the wines and assisted in the aging. In short, the 1967 is one of the longest-lived Nebbiolo one can find today. The allure of a bygone era of wine-making, is cherished in these bottles.
Wine Bond Marketplace is proud to present this special parcel of 1967s Barolos and Barbarescos. These come from one special collector, whom is very particular about every older bottles he owns, and I can see why after inspecting all of them. If you are looking for a completely new bottle with high levels on bottleneck, you will not find them. A quick and short mention on the bottle condition: All the bottles have their level on the lower neck (and they should be rightfully so). The foil seals are all original from the 60s, none of the corks sunken, none of them are re-corked or re-bottled by wineries, and labels are all intact. If you are looking for that special 1967, scroll down now to see the offers. Have a blast!.......RS

29/8/2024: Evolving with Tradition: A Dujac Collection with Back Vintage 2009 and 10 Malconsorts
Domaine Dujac has long been revered as a premier wine producer in Burgundy. Established in 1967 by Jacques Seysses, the Domaine quickly garnered acclaim for its exceptional Village, Premier and Grand Crus. Over the last two decades, Domaine Dujac had continued to evolve, working with tradition and innovation to maintain its position at the forefront of Burgundy’s wine scene.
When we mention Domaine Dujac, the name is Jacques Seysses, whom is committed in crafting wines that express the unique terroir of Burgundy. This dedication to terroir-driven wine-making, combine with meticulous vineyard management and a preference for whole-cluster fermentation, set the foundation for the Domaine’s success. The next generation, led by Jacques’ sons Jeremy and Alec Seysses, whom have taken over the reins, are continuing the legacy.
Wine-making at Dujac has evolved over the last two decades, to the ever changing climate changes. Domaine Dujac has responded by refining its vineyard management practices. This includes adjusting pruning techniques, canopy management, and harvest timing to ensure optimal grape ripeness while preserving the acidity and balance that are hallmarks of their wines. They have also invested in soil health and increased the use of organic and bio-dynamic practices. These were implemented between 2001-2011, and are sustainable practices that will ensure the longevity of the vineyards. In terms of wine-making, after 1999, when Jeremy and Alec took over the reins, they continued with whole-cluster fermentation, but also experimented with different percentages of clusters (some destemmed). These depend largely on the vintage, specific vineyard site, and their desire for balance, structure and expression.
The last two decades were an evolution era for Domaine Dujac, as they maintain commitment in producing top tier wines from their minuscule vineyards. The years of change in viticulture and wine-making have certainly fine-tuned the wines to another level. Many wine critics have awarded accolades to Domaine Dujac's wines over the vintages. Today, only a few Burgundy collectors and niche group of restaurants are allocated their wines. Whether it is a strong vintage or otherwise, the wines are snapped up quickly, even on secondary markets.
Wine Bond is proud to present, a first Dujac offer on marketplace. These rare village and Premier Crus come from a single collector, whom gets his allocation from the Domaine. While only the Village and Premier Crus are available today, the Grand Crus (Bonnes Mares, Clos de la Roche, Clos St Denis) may be available soon.Let's see......RS
26/8/2024: Icons of California Clarets Part 2 | Spottswoode . Araujo x Eisele . Montelena x Ridge and more
Spottswoode Estate is a prestigious family-owned winery located in the heart of Napa Valley, California. The estate has a long and storied history, but it is particularly known for its focus on producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Spottswoode estate was originally founded by George Schonewald, but it gained prominence under the ownership of the late Mary Novak, who purchased the property with her husband Jack Novak in 1972. After Jack's untimely death in 1977 (at age 44), Mary Novak took over the reins and continued to cultivate the vineyards, producing the first vintage of Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982. The winery remains family-run, with Mary’s daughters Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak actively involved in the business.
In the long history of Spottswoode, these star-studded winemakers had left their mark in their Estate Cabernet: Tony Soter (Dalla Valle, Eisele, Shafer, Soter Vineyards), Mia Klein (Dalla Valle, Cimarossa), Pam Starr (Crocker and Starr), Rosemary Cakebread (Cakebread Cellars, Inglenook) and Jennifer Williams (Pahlmeyer, Araujo). The winery's flagship wine, the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, is a highly-regarded expression of Napa Valley terroir. In addition to the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode also produces a limited amount of Sauvignon Blanc, another Cabernet Sauvignon "Lyndenhurst" (from young vines), and in the mid 2010s, a Syrah. Spottswoode is celebrated for its commitment to quality and consistency, and its wines are often compared to some of the best in the world. Some critics often compare the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon to First Growth Chateau Margaux, for its elegance and consistency, and it remains a symbol of dedication to excellence in wine-making. Today, four vintages of the Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon make their first appearance on marketplace. Don't miss them!
In addition to the Spottswoode offer, these other Californian wines also make their appearance.
Araujo x Eisele: After Araujo was sold to Chateau Latour, the name change of Araujo -> Eisele began in 2013. In the offers today, back vintages of Araujo and Eisele are offered side by side.
Chateau Montelena x Ridge: Both Chateau Montelena and Ridge Vineyards (Monte Bello) appear with more offers on some back vintages, and what better way to pit these two classical Claret makers.
Sine Qua Non x Verite: The only reason why I would put these two together, is because both producers had constantly gain perfect scores in their wines (even though the varietals may be different). These two powerhouses should go head to head.
Along with all the above, three other assortments complete the list of Californian wine offers. Today's offers, easily top Part 1 of our "Icons of California Clarets" (launched late last month) hence naming this as Part 2, should rightfully be so. Don't miss these iconic wines today, and have a great start to the week......RS
21/8/2024: A Collector's Treasures | Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne and Leflaive Puligny 1er Cru
Wine Bond marketplace may not have the luxury of an extensive wine list like others, but we do have a list of brokerage wines with the most competitive prices. Not to mention back vintages that are hard to find. Our 8% brokerage commission (seller) is also lower than most wine merchants' brokering fee. When a member's wine portfolio is handed over for valuation and brokerage, it never ceases to amaze me, the rarity of these wines in the collector's stash. For some of the lists, one look and you know its by a knowledgeable and savvy wine connoisseur. Recently I had the chance to peruse one of the biggest and rarest fine wine portfolio here at Wine Bond. We are talking about "every rare and treasured bottle" one can mention. The new listings today, will feature part of this collection, in particular: the back vintages, whites of Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne and Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Premier Crus.
The Majesty of Corton-Charlemagne by Bonneau du Martray, is one of Burgundy's most distinguished white. Located on the illustrious Corton hill, the estate produces two Grand Crus namely: Corton (for red) and Corton-Charlemagne (for white). The latter needs no further introduction for the historic site, with a lineage that can be traced back to the days of Emperor Charlemagne. Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne is a pure expression of its unique terroir, which is characterized by a combination of limestone soils, ideal exposure, and a cool micro-climate that helps retain acidity and freshness. The wine itself is a masterpiece, offering layers of complexity that unfold over time. In its youth, it displays aromas of citrus, green apple, and flint, with a firm, mineral-driven structure. As it ages, the wine develops richer notes of honey, very pronounced toasted nuts, and a harmonious finish. Bonneau du Martray's Corton Charlemagne is often revered for its precision, balance, and the ability to age gracefully for decades, evolving into a wine of extraordinary depth and elegance.
Domaine Leflaive is the quintessential producer of white Burgundy. The name is synonymous with excellence, producing some of the finest expressions of Chardonnay in the world. The Puligny-Montrachet Premier Crus of: Les Pucelles, Les Combettes, and Clavoillon, represent the epitome of Puligny-Montrachet terroir.
Les Pucelles: is perhaps the most famous of Leflaive’s Premier Crus. Located just below the Grand Cru Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet, this vineyard produces wines of remarkable finesse, with a delicate balance of floral, citrus, and mineral notes. The wines from Les Pucelles are known for their elegance and aging potential, often compared to Leflaive's Grand Crus.
Les Combettes: lies on the border between Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, and its wines often exhibit a richer, more opulent character. These wines are prized for their depth, with a luscious texture and layers of ripe fruit, underpinned by a firm, mineral backbone.
Clavoillon: is another distinguished Premier Cru, located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet. The wines from Clavoillon are typically more approachable in their youth, offering vibrant acidity, a full-bodied palate, and a complex array of flavors ranging from orchard fruits to hazelnuts and subtle spice.
Today's Bonneau du Martray and Domaine Leflaive white offers, are true expressions of Chardonnay that rivals the best in the world. For wine lovers and collectors, these wines represent the pinnacle of white Burgundy, capturing the essence of the land and the skill of the winemakers who bring them to life. Don't miss these today.....RS

13/8/2024: Bouchard Corton and Corton-Charlemagne with a Bordeaux Collection
Burgundy's Corton hill stands out as a beacon of viticultural excellence, and two of Burgundy's most revered Grand Crus: Corton and Corton-Charlemagne are no stranger to many. Among the many producers, Bouchard's long history and tradition in these two Grand Crus, embody the essence of Burgundy’s unique terroir.
Corton hill is a geological marvel, its soils a complex blend of limestone, marl and clay that provide the perfect foundation for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The hill is unique in Burgundy, as it is one of the few areas where Grand Crus are designated for both red and white wines. Bouchard, being one of Burgundy’s oldest and most esteemed wine estates, has been a steward of this region’s viticultural heritage for over a century., with significant holdings on the Corton hill. Their Le Corton is renowned for its structured Pinot Noir, with intense aromatics of red and dark fruits, complex with earthy undertones. The robust tannins, balance acidity and aging potential are renowned. On the other hand, their prime vineyard of Corton-Charlemagne has the ideal south-western exposure with limestone rich soils ideal for Chardonnay. Bouchard's Corton-Charlemagne are known for their balance of power and finesse. Notes of citrus, green apples, exotic fruits and hazelnut fill a bottle, along with its vibrant minerality. The oak influence is also subtle and well-integrated with age.
For our members, don't miss the two Bouchard offerings today: the 2010 Corton-Charlemagne and 2008 Le Corton. It has been a while since we had any Bouchard on marketplace, especially the popular Corton-Charlemagne. Snap them up before they are gone. Along with these, will be another small collection of Bordeaux with uber-friendly prices, names like: Duhart-Milon, Figeac, Pontet Canet and more. Have a great Tuesday.....RS
8/8/2024: Spot Offer: 2005 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva MAGNUM | One Available
Giacomo Conterno's Barolo Monfortino Riserva is considered one of the (if not the) most prestigious wine from the Barolo region. This is a winery with a long and coveted history, and the Monfortino Riserva is considered THE Barolo that no one can ever replicate.
Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, sourced from the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba. The vineyard's unique terroir is characterized by calcareous clay soils, and contributes to the wine's complexity and structure. 2005 is considered an admirable vintage with some challenges, a vintage that experienced a cool, wet spring followed by a hot and dry summer. The ripening of grapes for Giacomo Conterno was balance throughout, and harvest started on the third week of September. It was completed one week later. The harvest was fortunate for Giacomo Conterno, as they finished picking at the perfect time. One week after in October, a wet storm razed through the vineyards.
Sandwiched between the two spectacular vintages of 2004 and 2006; 2005 was for many years, considered an underdog. The release for 2005, sandwiched between 2004 (with many collectors rushing to get allocations), then the 2006 (again, allocations), was inevitable. The 2005 was definitely overlooked. Today, many connoisseurs are going back to the 2005 as the Barolo Monfortino Riserva in fact, excelled as compared with the 2004 and 2006. In terms of price, the 2005 has also, over the years, appreciated as much as the other two vintages. The wine is in a class of its own.
The 2005 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva is a firm wine with finely integrated tannins, coupled with a robust structure that promises further development with additional cellaring. 5/8/2024: An Australian Back Vintage Wine Collection in August | Noon . Greenock Creek . Standish and more
Australia's wine industry has long been celebrated for its unique expressions of wine and terroir. The period from the 1990s to 2000s was a particularly vibrant era for Australian wines, marked by significant advancements in wine-making techniques and a growing international reputation. The period were transformative for Australian wine-making, and saw a blend of traditional practices and modern innovations, leading to the production of wines that are both distinctive and world-class.
The key region of Barossa Valley is renowned for its powerful Shiraz, and produced some of the most celebrated wines during this period. The region's warm climate and diverse soils contributed to the richness and complexity of its wines. The vintage was 1998, and it was exceptional across many regions, but in particular for Shiraz of the Barossa Valley. The aging potential was limitless and some wines are still in their prime today. Then, vintages like 2002, 2004 and 2005 followed in style: 2002 having pronounced fruit character with good aging potential, 2004 show excellent balance and depth, while 2005 was a year of consistency, producing again (like 1998) big ripe flavours of power and structure. Through these vintages, Australian wines have shown remarkable aging potential.
In general, the wines of Australia from the period of 1990s to 2000s, represent a significant chapter in the country's wine-making history. 2/8/2024: A Journey into The Old Wines of Rivesaltes | Fortifieds from 1930s to 50s
Rivesaltes, a historic wine-producing region in the heart of the Roussillon in Southern France, is renowned for its unique and venerable vin doux naturel (naturally sweet wines). With a wine-making heritage that dates back to the 13th century, Rivesaltes has carved a niche for itself in the world of fortified wines. The timeless charm and fascinating world of old Rivesaltes wines should be every wine explorer's dream. Its distinctive characteristics and aging potential, can be appealing for many wine enthusiasts.
Rivesaltes benefits from a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The region's diverse soils, including clay, limestone, and schist, contribute to the complexity and richness of its wines. The primary grape varieties used in Rivesaltes include: Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, and Macabeu. Rivesaltes wines are produced using the traditional method of mutage, where grape spirit is added to the fermenting must (to halt fermentation), preserving the natural sugars of the grapes. This process results in wines that are both sweet and high in alcohol, ranging from 15% to 17% ABV. The wines are then aged in large oak casks, glass demijohns, or even in glass bottles, allowing for slow oxidation and the development of complex flavors.
The key characteristics of old Rivesaltes wines include:
Color: As they age, they evolve from a vibrant amber or deep gold to a rich mahogany or tawny hue. Grenache Blanc can develop to an almost orange colour over time.
Aroma: Mature Rivesaltes wines exhibit a stunning bouquet of dried fruits (figs, apricots, and raisins), nuts (almonds and hazelnuts), and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla). Additional notes of caramel, toffee, and coffee often emerge with extended aging.
Palate: On the palate, these wines are luscious and full-bodied, with a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity. They are complemented on the palate with hints of spice and oxidative notes.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Rivesaltes wines is their extraordinary aging potential. Thanks to the high sugar and alcohol content, as well as the oxidative aging process, these wines can be enjoyed many decades after their vintage. Properly stored, they can maintain their integrity and continue to develop complex flavors for 50 years and more. Old Rivesaltes wines are a testament to the enduring legacy of Roussillon's wine-making tradition. These are wines of unparalleled richness and complexity, truly treasures that can bring a wine connoisseur through an exceptional journey......RS

The winery's vineyards are located on the east side of St. Helena, benefiting from diverse soils and a favorable climate. The IX (9) estate is one of the greatest wine I encounter.

Their commitment to excellence are what truly matters........RS
26/7/2024: Spot Offer: Affordable Back Vintage Bordeaux from the 2000s ... From a Connoisseur's Collection
Marketplace is back with another spot offer this Friday, this time for some 2000s Bordeaux. More appellations and classified growths appear, with vintages between 2000 to 2009. Impressive vintages like 2000, 05 and 09 are part of this list, while others like 2003, 04, 06 and 08 make up the rest.
Looking at these vintages, and the classified growths available for sale, the connoisseur whom put up these on marketplace, knows his Bordeaux wines very well. Available only in a single case (of 12) for each wine, quantities are quite limited if you want to secure the bottles that catches your eye. With their attractive prices, and provenance perfect bottles, I assure you that these are some of the best prices you can find locally.
Vintages like 2004, 05, 06, 08, reminds me of the days when I was dealing in En Primeur, so I feel attached to them. These are the wines I had drank over the last fifteen years, and I know many are showing splendidly today. If there is one wine (in today's offer) which brings back fond memories, it has to be the 2004 Chateau Haut Bailly. Reason being: it was the first vintage which I was taught to handle En Primeur (so I had to be familiar with all the wines), and this wine was also the first vintage, that the late Jean-Bernard Delmas (from Chateau Haut Brion) became the consulting winemaker for Chateau Haut Bailly. He implemented a lot of changes in the 2004 vintage, which resulted in the improvement at Chateau Haut Bailly for the next decade, especially with their 2005 and 09 vintages. The 2004 was indeed the game-changer for Chateau Haut Bailly.
It doesn't get any better than these, so don't miss the offers today. Scroll down now to view them, have a great end to this week.....RS
24/7/2024: Sweets for my Sweet: Sauternes Offers with a Chateau d'Yquem Collection
It is refreshing to see sweet wine offers once in a while. While Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Italy, California offers appear often, I think Sauternes offers are often disregarded or not taken seriously. Today, a huge list of Sauternes also include a collection of Chateau d'Yquem (in different vintages and bottle sizes).
Sauternes produces some of the world’s most renowned and exquisite dessert wines. Known for their opulent sweetness and remarkable aging potential, these wines last forever. In wine auctions, bottles over a century (typically Chateau d'Yquem) periodically appears and the longevity of these wines are simply amazing. This celebrated appellation and Chateau is not to be taken lightly.
In the southern part of Bordeaux, along the Garonne River, the appellation known as Sauternes, beams in its morning mist and sunny afternoons. They are perfect for the Botrytis Cinerea of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The sugar (sweetness) concentration, acidity and aromatic complexity are hard to replicate. If there is one region I wish I can do a harvest, it is probably in Sauternes. It is labour intensive and grapes are hand-picked in multiple passes. This is to ensure only fruits affected by noble rot are selected. Skillful pickers generate low yields and take high risks with each pass. Truly, harvesting at a whole new level!
Sauternes wines are known for their rich, luscious sweetness and vibrant acidity. Typical aromas of honey, apricot, peach, and tropical fruits, are often complemented by hints of vanilla, caramel, and toasted nuts (oak). Full bodied when young, and as they age, they develop even more complexity, with flavors evolving into notes of dried fruits, nuts, and subtle spice. Chateau d'Yquem is perhaps the benchmarks of the appellation, while other notable estates include Chateau Rieussec, Suduiraut, Climens, each one as unique as the other. In the epitome of sweet wines wine-making, they offer an unparalleled sensory experience. Maybe these wines are for the next 100 years, but why wait.....RS
23/7/2024: More Gaja: 1997 Sperss and Conteisa x Perfect 2015 Solaia and 2019 Masseto
This week, more Gaja are here: 1998 Barbaresco, 1997 Conteisa, 1997 and 2003 Sperss. For those who miss out on our Gaja offers previously, don't miss these reloaded offers. Along with these back vintages Gaja, are two perfect Tuscan beauties: 2015 Solaia and 2019 Masseto.
The 2015 vintage for Solaia, is considered one of the best in recent years, marked by excellent weather conditions that contributed to the production of high-quality grapes. The year began with a cold and rainy winter, which helped to replenish water reserves in the soil. Then spring brought mild temperatures and adequate rainfall, leading to a smooth and uniform bud break. When summer came, it was hot and dry, with temperatures frequently reaching high levels. However, the vineyards were well-prepared to handle the heat with its water reserves. This period of warmth contributed to the development of concentrated flavors and aromas in the grapes. Harvest period was marked by feasible conditions, which allowed for a stress-free and gradual picking process. Grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness, resulting in excellent fruit quality with perfect phenolic maturity. These laid the foundation of a perfect Solaia.
2019 Masseto is about its exceptional quality, reflecting a combination of ideal weather conditions, meticulous vineyard management, and precise wine-making techniques. The winter of 2019 was mild with sufficient rainfall. Spring continued with moderate temperatures, promoting healthy vine growth and bud break. Summer was almost perfect with some heat, dry spells and occasional rain, typical of Bolgheri region. These conditions favored the development of ripe grapes, and phenolic maturity. 2019 had mild temperature, and picking started on the third week of September. The grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness. The 2019 is undoubtedly, a remarkable Merlot again.

In this second part offer, these single vineyard Barbarescos and Barolo land. These vineyards are all about Gaja's esteemed reputation.
Sori Tildin is one of Gaja's most celebrated single-vineyard Barbaresco wines, named to honor Angelo Gaja's grandmother, Clotilde Rey, affectionately known as Tildin. The Sori Tildin vineyard is located in the Barbaresco DOCG appellation, perched on a hilltop with southern exposure, a prime location superb for getting the first sun. The soils are a mix of clay and limestone. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested and sorted, then undergoes fermentation and aged in a combination of barriques and large oak casks.
San Lorenzo is another exceptional single-vineyard Barbaresco, named after the vineyard’s patron Saint. The San Lorenzo vineyard is located on a hillside, just south of the village of Barbaresco in the famed cru Secondine. San Lorenzo was one of the first single vineyard Nebbiolo release by Gaja, the inaugural vintage being 1967. During those years, it was rare for any Piedmontese winery to release single vineyard wines. The soil composition is primarily limestone and clay. Wine-making is similar to the Sori Tildin.
Sperss is the renowned Barolo wine from Gaja, representing the winery’s venture into the Barolo region after many years of focusing on Barbaresco. The Sperss vineyard is located in Serralunga d'Alba within the Barolo appellation and has a storied history. The family had been buying grapes from farmers in the Serralunga d'Alba, prior to 1961 but stopped after establishing their own estate wines. However in 1988, Angelo Gaja bought the Sperss vineyard after his father Giovanni insist on buying, the only Barolo vineyard he is interested in, to make their own Barolo. And the rest is history.
Whether it is the Chardonnay of Gaia & Rey, the Barbaresco and the single vineyards of Costa Russi, Sori Tildin, San Lorenzo, or the Barolo Sperss, each vineyard produce wines that reflect the unique characteristics of their respective terroirs.
